618 industrial plots under MEZ to help foreign investment: 450cr US dollar investment in Mirsarai Econ Zone expected

A total of 618 industrial units are being built in phases at a cost of US$ 450 crores at Mirsarai Economic Zone (EZ) near the costal line of Bay of Bengal under Chattogram aimed at creating employment opportunities for about 5 lakh Bangladeshi workers.
BEPZA economic zone is being established on 1,150 acres of land at Mirsarai. Upazila of North Chattogram at coastal line of the Bay . Some 618 industrial plots will be developed there for investors where 350 industrial units will be installed in first phase. The development work of these industrial plots is progressing fast,” Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) General Manager(PR) Nazma Binte Alamgir told media persons recently. .She said construction of surrounding dike embankment of the project has almost been completed as part of the first phase work, construction of one of the two proposed connecting roads is going in full swing and land development of the project has also started. Nazma said it would be possible to set up 300-350 industrial units in these 618 industrial plots. The biggest BEPZA project will be implemented in phases and it is expected that the first phase work of Economic Zone project will be completed by june 30, 2021 where 250 plots will remain ready in first phase. In first phase installations o f industries will require about 1.5 lakh workers, BEPZA opined.
In the first phase, some 250 industrial units will be constructed at a cost of $1.25 billon by 30 June, 2021 which is expected to create employment opportunities for 1. 5 lakh people, she added. The BEPZA General Manager said the Mirsharai Economic Zone will foster green industrialisation to conserve the biodiversity. At present, investors of 38 countries across the world have a total investment worth $4.11 billion in eight export processing zones (EPZ) under BEPZA. Among 588 factories of the eight EPZs, 469 are functioning and rest of factories will be operational within a few years.In these factories of running industrial units under BEPZA 4.5 lakh workers are working Despite demands of industrial plots by the investors, plots would not be allotted in Dhaka and Chattogram EPZs lack of plots in respective zones.. Mentionable that multinational companies like Samusung , Soni were refused allot plots in capital and port city. In this context against demand of BEPZA, Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority has been allotted 1150 acres of land at Sadhur Char and Pirer char under Mirsarai upazila beside coastal line of the Bay of Bengal which is half of the total BEPZA areas of 8 EPZs (2309 acres of land) BEPZA General Manager(PR) further said following the success of 8 EPZs in the country , the investors of home and abroad are most keen to invest in the newly developed industrial belt of BEZA at Mirsasrai.
She also told that skillness in establishing EPZs, managing ability and professional experiences will accelerate the development works of the BEZA Economic zone. She hoped after commissioning of the MEZ , the intending investors will be provided plots as per their requirements in that economic zone;. As a part of first phase works of MEZ, the surrounding embankment (dike embankment) construction works nearing completion and the constructions of super dike embankment for protection of whole zone areas is progressing fast . China Harbour Engineering Company is implementing the dike embankment works under supervision of Bangladesh Water Development Board. Project Director of MEZ of BEZA Abdul Alim told this correspondent that 90 percent works of dike embankment already completed and the works of 300 feet breadth connecting road is advancing fast. He said the total land development works will be completed by end of next year. BEPZA Public Relations Manager ASM Anowar Parvez told that as a part of first phase works, earth development, road, drain, boundary wall construction, power transmission line, power sub-station, water supply & sewerage installations, sanitary & ETP , preservation of rain water project will be implemented.
BEPZA sources said BEZA signed a MOU on May 18, 2017 with BEPZA for establishment of Mirsarai Economic Zone. As per MOU, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated ground breaking ceremony of MEZ in BEPZA Investors Summit-2018 through video conference from Bangabandhu International conference hall on January 24, 2018
