4,000 ethnic minority people to get livelihood facilities in Barind area

Some 4,000 ethnic minority people including 2,000 women will be engaged in various income-generating activities in Barind area for lifting them out of poverty.
To this end, 1000 of the enlisted people from 2000 households will be brought under need-based training on various trades and vocations like electrics, mobile, mechanic, tailoring, computer operating, beautification, driving, carpentry and building construction.
The skill and capacity building activities will be implemented under a three-year project titled “Fighting Forced Labour with Adivasi and Dalit Communities in South Asia” in 30 villages under Tanore Upazila in Rajshahi and Nachole Upazila in Chapainawabganj districts till December, 2021.
This was revealed at a project promotion workshop held at Nachole Upazila Parishad Hall room on Monday. More than 100 people including 60 ethnic community people and officials of all the line departments were present at the meeting.
Agriculture Sustainable and Socio-economic Development Organization (ASSEDO), a national level voluntary development organization, is going to implement the project with financial and technical supports of European Union and Tradecraft Exchange.
Chaired by Upazila Nirbahi Office Sabina Sultana the workshop was addressed, among others, by Upazila Chairman Abdul Kader and its Vice-chairman Rezaul Karim, ASSEDO Executive Director Rabiul Alam, Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Anowar Ali and Upazila Agriculture Officer AKM Sadiqul Islam.
Rabiul Islam said the project is aimed to address the systemic and structural vulnerabilities of marginalized agricultural communities for eliminating the menace of child labour.
60 more people imparted training on green mango processing: A total of 60 more people including 30 women were imparted need-based training on proper processing and preservation of green mangoes fell from stalk before maturity due to various reasons considering their economic value.
 Postharvest Technology Division (PTD) of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) organized the two-day training on “Green Mango Postharvest Handling and Processing” at Training Room of Volahat Upazila Agriculture Extension Office here.
 The program has been organized aimed at training up the people on diversified use of green mango for developing different value added products side by side with increasing shelf life of green mango for longer consumption and generating income and employment opportunity in agro-processing industry.
Chief Scientific Officer of PTD Dr Miaruddin and its Programme Director Dr Golam Ferdous Chowdhury addressed the closing ceremony yesterday as focal resource persons while Upazila Agriculture Officer Shariful Islam was in the chair.
Upazila Vice-chairman Shahnaj Parveen, Zila Parishad Member Hosne Ara, President of Mango Foundation Mozammel Haque also spoke on the occasion.
The speakers mentioned every year huge quantities of green mango drop immaturely due to storm or other natural calamities before harvesting time causing huge financial loss to the growers.
 There are many scopes of processing and preserving the fallen mangoes through adopting modern technologies to recover the financial loss of the growers, they said. Dr Miaruddin said proper handling, processing, packaging, transportation and storage can help loss of substantial amount of immature mango every year.
