40 shops gutted in Chitalmari, fire station demanded

At least 40 shops were completely gutted when a devastating fire broke out in Chitalmari bazar situated in Chitalmari Upazila headquarters in the district of Bagerhat on Tuesday evening.
 The loss of fire is Tk.8/10 crores, according to a preliminary estimation.
It is learnt from the locals and the eye-witnesses that the fire originated from a petrol-diesel shop near at the local Shaheed Minar spread to its adjacent shops. At that time some barrels of diesel oil were blasted and within moments the fire engulfed almost the whole bazar within moments and went out of control. Local people and the shop keepers tried their best to extinguish the fire, but in vain. Then being afraid the shop keepers closed their shops and began to move to and fro. Children and women were shifted to the safer places. Being informed of the matter Upazila Nirbai Officer Didarul Alam, Officer-in-charge of Chitalmari PS Dilip Kumar Sarkar, Upazila Vice-chairman Shaikh Rashed Mukul, Upazila Woman Vice-chairman Kana Gazi, former Upazila Chairman Ashok Kumar Baral, Upazila Awami league President Al-haj Mohon Ali Biswas, some other people’s representatives and hundred of people of the adjacent villages rushed to the spot.
By this time a fire brigade unit from Bagerhat, one from Tungipara and one from Najirpur rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after a long fighting for about 2 hours. In spite of that 40 shops with their all belongings were burnt to ashes. It is alleged that at the time of the fire incident a number of miscreants looted many shops of the bazar. Fire affected businessmen Ershad Ali Munshi, Nur Islam Munshi, Shamim Hossain and others disclosed to this correspondent, such a devastating fire incident did not take place here previously.
Shaikh Nizamuddin, UP Chairman of Chitalmari Sadar Union told, if there was a fire brigade station at Chitalmari the damage of properties was not so wide. So, he strongly demanded the installation of a fire brigade station at Chitalmari immediately. The fire affected shop keepers told, we cannot make up our losses if the Government will not extend its helping hands to us.
 Mujibor Rahman Shamim, Chnairman of Chitalmari Upazila Parishad disclosed, we are trying to bring the matter to the notice of Premier Shaikh Hasina and MP Shaikh Helal Uddin so that the owners of the gutted shops can get financial support in order to recover their losses.
