40 held for catching Hilsa in Bhola, Barisal defying ban

Thirty three fishermen were detained for catching Hilsa defying the government ban in Daulatkhan, Tajumuddin, Lalmohan uapzilas of the district on Wednesday.
Among them, 15 fishermen were sentenced to different simple jail terms through mobile courts. They are the residents of Daulatkhan upazila.
Police, Coastguard and fisheries department officials launched drive in the Meghna river in Daulatkhan upazila and detained 15 fishermen along with 13000 meters current net and a boat.
Besides, 8 fishermen were detained from Choumohoni point of Tajumuddin upazila and 10 fishermen from Meghna and Tetulia river of Lalmohon upazila.
The government imposed a ban on catching, selling, manufacturing and transportation of Hilsa for 11 days from October 5 to 15, the peak time of breeding, aiming to boost its production.
Barisal Correspondent adds: Seven fishermen were jailed to ten-day each and three others fined Tk.1,000 each for violating Hilsa fishing ban on Sandhya, Arial Kha, Kirtankhola rivers in Barisal on Wednesday.
Bimal Das, District Fishery Officer (hilsa) , said administrative magistrate Sitesh Chandra Sarkar , led the mobile court.
Besides 7 fishermen fined total Tk. 14,000 on October 5 at Bakerganj, 9 fishermen fined Tk 18,000 on October 7 at Bakerganj and Mehendiganj and another 9 fishermen at Barisal Sadar upazila fined Tk. 27,000 , the fishery officer told.
The government has imposed an 11-day ban on catching, selling and transporting of Hilsa beginning on October 5 across the country to ensure safe spawning and protecting the Hilsa fish population.
Sources at the fisheries department said that since this particular fish lays eggs in plenty during this period-Ashwin-Kartik, five days before and after of Baro Purnima-the government imposed the restriction on catching the delicious fish to enhance production.
