Around 40 fishing trawlers sank in the Meghna River and over 150 thatched houses were damaged as a nor’ wester lashed different unions of Kamalnagar upazila on Thursday afternoon.
The fishing trawlers capsized in Ludhua, Patabania, Katoria, Matabbarnagar and Matihar areas after they were caught in the storm, said locals. However, most of the boats were anchored at ghats while sinking. There was no report of any casualty as fishermen managed to swim ashore.
Deputy commissioner of Laxmipur AKM Tipu Sultan, however, said 15-20 fishing trawlers sank in the river during the storm.
Meanwhile, over 150 houses were damaged and many trees uprooted in several unions during the storm.
