At least 40 people have suffered multiple burn injuries after several air conditioners (ACs) exploded inside a mosque in Narayanganj.
The incident took place at Baitus Samad Jam-e-Mosque in Sadar Upazila’s Fatullah area at around 8.45 pm on Friday, said Morshed Alam, Station Officer at Hajiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence.
The injured were first taken to Narayanganj Sadar Hospital. Later, they were sent to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (SHNIBPS) in Dhaka.
Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH Police Outpost, confirmed that 37 injured people have been admitted to the hospital.
Dr Samanta Lal Sen, Coordinator of the Institute, said most of the 37 patients admitted in the institute have major burns on their bodies. Condition of many patients is critical, he added.
Quoting Narayanganj Police, Mohammad Mamun-or Rashid, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station in Dhaka said all six air conditioners of the mosque have exploded during the Esha prayers.
At least 40 devotees, including Imam and Muazzin of the mosque, injured in the blast. Of them, 37 have been admitted to SHNIBPS in critical conditions, he added.
An on duty doctor said all the devotees received severe burn injury. They will be
taken to ICU following initial care.  
Locals said at least 250 devotees took part in the Esha prayers at the mosque. The incident occurred while they were performing Witr prayer.
Rahmatullah Chowdhury, in-charge of Bomb Disposal Unit of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit, told media that primarily they found that the explosion took place from the air-conditioner.
“But we are analysing the information and a team from the Bomb disposal unit is also going to Narayanganj to collect evidences to find the nature and reason behind the explosion,” he added.
