4-storey building collapses in Rajshahi

An abandoned four-storey building has collapsed in the Koyardara Christian Para area of Rajshahi city. The accident took place in the metropolis around 3 pm on Sunday. However, no casualties were reported.
According to locals, the owner of the building is the late rod-cement trader Akhtaruzzaman Bablu. The building suddenly collapsed during the afternoon rain. Meanwhile, the fire service department said the building was made of substandard materials where no building construction code of any kind was obeyed. Due to which the building collapsed and fell to the ground. However, no casualties were reported as there were no people in the building.
Locals said there were three cars and two vans under the building. They are pressed down.
Abdur Rauf, senior station officer at the Rajshahi Sadar Station of the Fire Service and Civil Defense, said the building was about 60 feet long. It was 40 feet wide. Construction work up to the fourth floor was completed. The beam was raised to raise another floor. The building was being constructed with very low quality construction materials. Due to this the building has collapsed.
He said that whether the design of the building was approved or not, what kind of construction material was used will be investigated.
It is learned that the owner of the building was a businessman named Akhtaruzzaman Bablu. He died about a year ago. Now the building is owned by his younger brother Nuruzzaman Peter.
