Members of elite force Rapid Action Battalion (Rab-6) arrested four members of stolen oil syndicate and seized around 3040 liters stolen fuel-oil from Bhairab river in Digholia upazila area of Khulna district while the syndicate members were taking preparations for smuggling oil through four boats at dawn on Friday. Rab-6 arranged a press briefing on Friday night at its Labonchara Headquarter in the city and informed the matter to the journalists.
The arrestees are- Md. Akter Hossain,42, son of Sheikh Lutfar Rahman, Sheikh Nasimuddin,22, son of Sheikh Akram Hossain, Al Amin Khan Suman,29, son of Md. Anwar Khan and Shimul Khan,22, son of Md. Nazrul Khan. All; the arrestees are resident of village Formayeshkhana under Digholia upazila of Khulna district.
It is informed in the press briefing that a team of Rab-6 conducted drive at dawn on Friday at Barmashil ghat area in Khalishpur in the city and Bandaghat area Senhati in Digholia upazila of Khulna district, arrested the four fuel-oil smugglers and seized around 3040 liters fuel-oil while the smugglers were trying to smuggle the fuel-oil by four boats. The Engine boats were also seized by the members of Rab. Among 2800 liters are Diesel and 240 liters are furnace oil.
Md. Enayet Hossain Mannan, CPC special company commander of Rab-6 who is also an additional police superintendent (ASP) told the newsmen that the fuel-oil smuggling syndicate have been committing their unfair business since long.
The arrested persons could not show the proper documents of purchasing fuel-oil, ASP Enayet added.
Sources said, some influential persons of Khalishpur and Digholia areas lead the stolen fuel-oil syndicate. Among them names of Mizanur Rahman Mizan, Lokman. Rockey, Shahin, Khalid, Ajgor, Tariqul. Bappy and Zia of Khalishpur area under Khalishpur police station and Enam, Al Amin, Tomas. Palash, Saiful Buro, Bipul alias Tariqul, Sayeedul, Sabbir, Aktar, Nasir and Almas of Digholia upazila area under Digholia police station.
Recently, local people caught some persons of stolen fuel-oil syndicate along with 28 barrels diesel which were stolen from an oil tanker named “Markinten-13” and informed the police. But police did not take any step against them, on the contrary, police filed false cases against some local people who were innocent.
The gangs of stolen fuel-oil syndicate are active in Khulna city and district areas for a long time. Disbursement of stolen fuel-oil worth about taka crores have increased recently particularly at Kashipur area under Khalishpur police station in the city and in Digholia upazila area in the district. Some dishonest traders have allegedly been giving monthly tolls to three police stations ( Khalishpur & Daulatpur police stations in the city and Digholia police station in the district) and as such law enforcers particularly police do not take any action against the stolen fuel-oil traders, it is alleged.
Concerned sources said, fuel oil including petrol, diesel, octane , furnace oil and kerosene are brought from Chittagong by oil tankers in three oil depots named Padma, Meghna and Jamuna at city’s Khalishpur area which are anchored at three depot ghats beside the river Bhairab. Immediately after the anchoring the oil, the gangs of stolen fuel-oil syndicate become active for their brisk business. They steal oil through hose pipes at dead night by boats, connecting with tankers and collect petrol, diesel, octane and kerosene filling in drums. Even they collect oil by plastic canes directly from the tankers in collaboration with some dishonest officials and staffs of the tankers, it is alleged. The stolen fuel oil are sold by boats. Besides, furnace oil are smuggled from the oil companies. After smuggling furnace oil, water is mixed with it which are sold at different factories and industries in Khulna. The larger portion of the stolen fuel-oil are sold to the dealers. Besides, the stolen fuel-oil are also sold at different shops at city’s Khalishpur and Daulatpur and Digholia upazila areas.
