4 researchers get Mirza Banu & Sirajul Islam Endowment Fund Award

Four researchers were conferred “Mirza Banu and Sirajul Islam Endowment Fund Award” for their outstanding contributions to original research in history at Dhaka University (DU).
The recipients are – Major General Sarwar Hossain (Military Secretary to the President of Bangladesh), ASM Mohsin (Teacher of University of Asia Pacific), Suma Karmaker (Teacher of Bangladesh Open University) and Khadiza Khatun (Teacher of Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls’ College), said a DU press release.
Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Dhaka University (DU) Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman handed over the award among the researchers as the chief guest at Sirajul Islam Lecture Hall of DU recently. Department of History organised the event.
Retired Professor of the Department of Islamic History and Culture of University of Calcutta, India Dr. Sushil Chaudhury delivered Mirza Banu Memorial Lecture on “Bengal Textile Industry (17th -18th Century): Alleged Poverty of the Weavers”.
Donor of the Endowment Fund Prof. Dr. Sirajul Islam addressed the function as the special guest. Dr. Sirajul Islam, former professor of DU History Department worked as the Chairman of the Board of Editors of Banglapedia, the National Encyclopedia of Bangladesh and the Editor of the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh.
Dean of the Faculty of Arts Professor Dr. Abu Md. Delwar Hossain and Prof. Dr. Asha Islam and Bindu Islam, daughters of Mirza Banu and Sirajul Islam addressed the function.
DU VC Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman recalled the outstanding contributions of Dr.
Sirajul Islam to develop education and research in the country. He
congratulated the awardees as well as thanked the Eminent Historian Dr.
Sushil Chaudhury for delivering memorial lecture. He also hoped that the
students and researchers would be highly benefited by this lecture.
