UNB, Dhaka :
Four gas-fired rental power plants on Wednesday received the Cabinet Purchase Committee’s approval for extension of their power purchase agreements with the government.
Of the four plants, 20 MW Bogra, 50 MW Kumargaon and 50 MW Shajibazar power plants belong to Energy Prima Ltd, a subsidiary of the Hosaf Group.
The fourth one is 34.50 MW Bhola Power Plant owned by Venture Energy Resource Ltd.
The extension of the rental power plants came amid the experts’ criticism of their high power tariff and also the government’s promise not to allow anymore rental power plants.
Energy Prima’s each of three plants obtained a three-year extension for their power purchase agreement (PPA) with the state-owned Power Development Board.
This is the second time that the four rental power plants received extension since they received the government’s approval in January 2008 for their operation.
A meeting of the Cabinet body, with Finance Minister AMA Muhith in the chair, gave the approval to separate proposals placed by the Power Division.
The official documents show that tariff of electricity of all the three plants of the Energy Prima was increased while the power tariff of Venture Energy’s plan was decreased.
Under the extended deal, PDB will buy electricity from Energy Prima’s 20 MW Bogra plant at Tk 2.71 per kilowatt hour (each unit) while it’s exiting rate is Tk 2.50.
The Energy Prima’s 50 MW Kumargaon plant’s tariff was raised to Tk 2.89 per unit against the existing rate of Tk 2.68 while its Shahjibazar plant’s tariff was increased to Tk 2.98 per unit from exiting Tk 2.84 per unit.
The Venture Energy’s 34.50 MW Bhola power plant’s tariff was decreased to Tk 3.48 per unit from existing rate of Tk 3.57.
The government has to pay about Tk 723 crore to Energy Prima for purchase of electricity from its three rental power plants in the next three years while it will pay Tk 166 crore to the Venture Energy’s Bhola plant for power purchase.
The Cabinet body also approved cost variation proposals of Road Transport and Highway Division for Dhaka-Chittagong 4-lane project for its four segments.
A proposal of the Power Division for pre-paid metering in Comilla and Mymensingh and another proposal for procurement of conductor, bare received the nod of the Cabinet Purchase Committee.
