Four people are feared dead after a train derailed in a tunnel south of Taiwan. At least 20 people were seriously injured in the incident, confirmed Channel News Asia (CNA) reported this, quoting the country’s fire department sources.

“The train, heading towards the tourist area of ??Taitung from the north of Hualien, caused some carriages to hit the wall of the tunnel, resulting in the train derailment,” the fire department said in a statement. – reports Reuters.

Three people with serious injuries were taken to the hospital, the statement said. “Rescue efforts are being made to take the rest to the hospital.”

The fire department said the train was carrying around 350 passengers and now the rescue efforts are ongoing, the statement added.

80 to 100 passengers have been rescued from the first four carriages of the train while five to eight carriages have “deformed” and are hard to gain access to, the fire personnel said.

The accident took place at a time when the traditional week-long Tomb Sweeping Day was about to begin.
