Four dams on the right bank of Atrai river in Naogaon have been breached and 8/10 crop fields have been newly flooded. Earlier, the dam broke and caused two floods. Recently, when the river water receded, the Naogaon Water Development Board started work by appointing a contractor for the repair or reconstruction of the broken.
The water level of the Atrai River is flowing at 70 to 80 and 100 cm above the danger level due to sudden heavy rains and mountain slopes coming down from the upper reaches. It is learned that at the end of July and the beginning of August, the water level of Atrai River rose and the dam broke at Nurullabad Saji Para, Jokahat and Chakrampur points of Manda upazila. At the same time, the Jatamrul dam in Atrai upazila also collapsed. There was no crop in the field at that time. In mid-August, there was another flood in the second phase.
There was not much damage at that time. When the flood waters receded, the Naogaon Water Development Board hired a contractor to repair or re-excavate the dams. Suddenly, during the last week, the water of the Atrai River overflowed and started flowing at about 100 cm above the danger level.
The dams broke again and the crop fields were submerged in the flood waters. Farmers of the two upazilas bought aman paddy saplings at high prices and planted crops after seeing the dams being repaired or dammed. Suddenly, their new crops sank again in the flood.
Talking to Naogaon Water Development Board Executive Engineer Md. Arifuzzaman Khan, he said, “We started the work by hiring a contractor to repair or rebuild the broken dams.” Due to the sudden rise of the river, the dams broke again. As a result, the fields of the mentioned crops were submerged in the flood waters.
