4 cops, 4 informants sued for extorting money

A case has been filed against seven people, including four members of the Detective Branch (DB) of police, for allegedly implicating a youth in a Yaba case falsely and extorting money from his family threatening to put into crossfire.
Adv Kazi Sanwar Ahmed Labu, lawyer of victim Zahid alias Rana who is now in jail, filed the case with the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Salem M Noman.
 The accused are Abul Kalam Azad, inspector of DB of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, its sub-inspector Afsar Uddin Rubel, constables Pappu and Monir, and police sources Murad, Milon and Khokon.
The court took cognisance of the complaint and asked the CMP deputy commissioner to take legal action in this regard.
According to the complaint, a CMP DB team arrested two people — Rana and Azad — from Badda and Ramna areas of the capital on July 2 last and took them to the CMP DB office on July 4.
Azad was released allegedly after taking bribe from his family while Rana was taken to Kotwali Police Station on the same day.
On Wednesday, he was taken to Pahartali area of the port city and taken back to Kotwali Police Station on the same day. Later, a case was filed against him with the police station mentioning that Rana was arrested along with some 500 Yaba tablets from Pahartali area.
The DB members allegedly collected Tk 1 lakh from Rana’s brother Nirob threatening to put Rana into crossfire if the money was not paid, according to the complaint.
