4 BNP activists picked up by police in city

Police on Saturday afternoon picked up BNP’s Assistant Office Secretary Taiful Islam Tipu and three other leaders and activists from in front of the party’s central office at Naya Paltan in the city.
Witnesses said that Paltan police all on a sudden picked up Taiful Islam Tipu, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Vice-President Nazmul Ahsan and two others when they were standing in front of the office.
BNP’s Assistant Office Secretary Belal Ahmed told The New Nation, ” The four of our party and associate body’s leaders were taken away by Paltan Police.”
When contacted, duty officer Bashirul Islam of Paltan Police Station said he did not know anything about the arrests. On the other hand, the officer in-charge of the police station did not receive the phone calls.
Sources said that tension was mounting within the party over its November 7 rally in front of the party’s central office. The administration has yet not given permission to the party to hold the rally.
