4 AL’s Councillors win unopposed

Four Awami League backed councillors, including two for Women Reserve Seats, have reportedly been elected unopposed in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) polls scheduled to be held on January 30.
They are Md Anwarul Iqbal, Ward No. 25, Md Arif Hossain, 43, (incumbent councillor), present councillor Nargis Mahtab, Women Reserve Seat Ward No. 6 (combined general Ward No. 16,17, 18) and Nilufar Rahman, Women Reserve Seat Ward No. 8 (combined general Ward No. 22, 23, 26), said Md Abdul Baten, Returning Officer of the DSCC, on Friday.
One of the councillors was elected as he was lone candidate and another one was declared winner as his rivals’s nomination papers has been declared as illegal, Baten said.
The two others candidates have been declared winners their competitors withdrew their nomination papers, he said.
“We have informed the candidates about their unopposed win,” DSCC Returning Officer Abdul Baten.
The gazette will publish after concluding the election, he added.
A total of seven candidates are vying for the mayor post while 335 for general ward councillors and 82 for reserved women councillors’ posts in the DSCC election.
According to the Election Commission, 23.67 lakh voters in the DSCC will cast their votes in the elections using Electronic Voting Machines. Alongside electing a mayor, they will also elect a total of 75 ward councillors and 25 reserved women councillors.
