35 candidates to vie in SCBA polls Mar 12-13

Elections to the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) executive committee 2014-15 will be held on 12-13 March with participation of 35 candidates against 14 posts.
Voting will take place on the Supreme Court premises from 10 am to 5 pm with a break for an hour. The number of voters is 4,054.
SCBA Superintendent Nimesh Chandra Das told BSS that 52 aspirants had submitted nomination papers against 14 posts. Of them, 17 withdrew their candidature by March 3. Therefore, the number of valid candidates is now 35.
Four candidates are contesting for the post of president, four for vice-president, three for secretary, three for treasurer, five for assistant secretary and 16 for member posts.
A sub-committee, led by M Noor Hossain Chowdhury, will conduct the election.
Two separate panels are contesting in SCBA election. Sammilita Ainjibi Samannaya Parishad is supported by pro-Awami League and like-minded party lawyers and Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Panel is backed by pro-BNP-Jamaat and like-minded party lawyers.
Former law minister Abdul Matin Khasru and Advocate Rabiul Alam Budu are leading Sammilita Ainjibi Samannaya Parishad as the president and secretary candidates while Bangladesh Bar Council Vice-Chairman Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain and SCBA incumbent secretary Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokan are leading Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Panel.
