33 pc more workers went abroad last year: Minister

Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam on Wednesday said that 33 percent more workers went abroad in 2017 than the previous year.
 “In that year a total of 10,08,525 workers went abroad with job. We have a plan to send 12,00,000 expatriates abroad in 2018,” the minister said while addressing a press conference in Probashi Bhaban in the city.
The press conference was organised to expose the success of the ministry.
He said that 5,51,308 workers went to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, 99,787 to Malaysia, 89,074 to Oman, 82,012 to Qatar and 49,604 to Kuwait.
1,21,941 female workers went to the Middle East.
The minister said that 13,526.48 million US dollar was earned as remittance in the year.
Nurul Islam said, there are 70 technical training institutes including six institutes of marine technology for the purpose of imparting training for skill development for the expatriate workers in 48 trades.
The minister said that 6,217 persons were given Tk 77,50, 65,000 as expatriate loan.
He also said that the wage earners board has given an amount to the troubled expatriates families as donations.
The minister also presented different welfare activities of his ministry.
Acting Secretary of the ministry Nomita Haldar and Additional Secretary Md. Aminul Islam, among others, were present.
