Shootout panic in Jhenaidah: 33 killed in ‘gunfights’ in three years

Panic of shootouts and gunfight still exists in Jhenaidah district, taking away peaceful sleep at night.
The people of the district fear presence of plainclothes men in the name of law enforcing agencies at doors any time of the day.
It is because they have gathered sorrowful experience of the deaths of 33 people in ‘shootouts’ and ‘gunfights’ in last three years.
Most of them were picked up and abducted by plainclothes men in the name of law enforcing agencies.
Two youths were killed in ‘gunfight’ with the police in the Sadar upazila on July 1. The deceased were identified as Shahid Al Mahmud, 25, son of Rajab Ali, and Anisur Rahman, 26, son of Abdus Sattar. The first named passed Fazil from the Jhenaidah Alia Madrasa.
His family claimed that some men introducing themselves as police officers took him away from their home on the night of June 13. But Jhenaidah police rejected the allegation, saying they had no information regarding Mahmud’s detention, or arrest. On April 21, a HSC examinee was killed in ‘gunfight’ with the police in Kaliganj upazila. He was identified as Mahbub Hasan Limon, 18, while another student Shohanur Rahman’s bullet-hit body was recovered from Chuadanga district on April 20. He went missing from Kaliganj upazila on April 10. April 13, two leaders of Islami Chhatra Shibir were found shot dead after missing for quite some time. The deceased were Abu Jar Giffari, 22, son of Islam Ali, a resident of Chapali village of Kaliganj upazila in Jhenaidah, and Shamim Hossain, 20, son of Ruhul Amin, a resident of Bakolia village of the same upazila.
Besides, a body was recovered from Fadilpur village of Kotchandpur upazila on May 16 last year and another body from Sailkupa on July 26 in 2015. The cop members recovered a body from Sadar upazila on November 16 in 2014 and another body from Sailkupa on July 26 the same year.
The other dead victims were BNP activist Rafiqul Islam, alleged terror Yousuf Ali Biswas, Uzzal Hossain, Asadul Islam, Mafidul Haque, Jamaat leader Enamul Haq Biswas, Hafez Abul Kalam, extremist leader Hamiduzzaman Hadi, Shohag Sarder and robber Moinuddin.
Besides, the BNP leader’s son Golam Azam alias Palash, BNP leader Rabiul Islam, Jubo Dal activist Mirazul Islam, trader Taimur Rahman, AL activist Enamul Hossain, Shibir activist Hafez Jasim Uddin, Shariful Islam Nazu, Azad Hossain and Mofazzal Hossain, among others, were the dead victims in last three years.
Sheikh Altaf Hossain, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Jhenaidah, told The New Nation, “Police used to shoot at the miscreants in self-defence only during the drive.” He rejected the allegation of picking up anybody in plainclothes and killing them in ‘gunfight’.
