About 30 thousand people including fishermen, dry fish traders and labourers may assemble at Dubla Dry Fish village on the occasion of fishy drying season this year; it is expected by Sundarban forest department. Following this the revenue of the forest department will be increased from dried fish sector.
This catching of and fish drying season normally starts at Dubla in the middle of the English month of October every year. But due to imposing ban on the catching of hilsa and all other species of fish from the Bay of Bengal and Sundarban forest during the period from Oct. 01 to Oct, 22 the season started late this year. This fish drying season will continue till the first week of the month of March.
The Forest Department informed, the distance of Dubla Fish Dry village (or Dubla fisherman village) from Mongla Sea Port is 90 nautical miles by water route. On the occasion of fish drying season several thousand fishermen, fish traders and labourers will assemble at Meher Alir Char, Alorkol, Office Killa, Majher Killa, Shelar Char, Narikelbaria, Choto Ambaria, Baro Ambaria, Manikkhali, Kaborkhali, Chaprakhair Char, Kokiklmoni and Haldekhalir Char from Bagerhat, Satkhira, Khulna, Pirojpur, Barguna, Patuakhali, Chittagong etc. coastal districts every year. All these small islands are jointly known as Dubla Fisherman village. They catch fish of different species from the sea with different kinds of fishing nets, sort them and dry them on all those islands. In order to do all the processing they are to erect temporary shelters on them (chars).
At the time of the departure of the fishermen from Chila point for Dubla fisherman village Abul of Joymoni, Taher of Chila, Abdullah of Chandpai village under Mongla Upazila, Ruhul of Perikhali village under Rampal Upazila and some other fishermen told, as the different law enforcing agencies including RAB are operating drives regularly in and around Sundarban forest and in the Bay of Bengal we expect to catch fish from the sea and make them dried without attack of the jungle pirates this year. But nobody can check the natural calamities like cyclone and tidal surge. So, we urge all the concerned authorities to take all the necessary steps so that we can catch fish and make them dried without any trouble.
Mahmudul Hasan, DFO (Divisional Forest Officer), Eastern Division of Sundarban forest (in Bagerhat district) told, like the past we are also taking full security for the fishermen. He further added, the forest department earned a sum of Taka bout 1.5 cores as revenue in the last fiscal year from dry fish. But in the current fiscal year we are expecting to earn more.
