At least 300 illegal shacks and shops were demolished on both sides of railway lines from Tejgaon to Mohakhali in the capital on Monday. The drive lasted for four hours from 9am to 1pm. There was no bulldozer following yesterday’s clash between law enforcers and slum dwellers at Moghbazar, Abdul Majid, Officer-in-Charge of Dhaka Railway Police Station said.During Sunday’s drive, several hundred people, many with sticks, chased the members of the eviction team over removal of a shanty close to the rail track. They threw brickbats at the law enforcers. Policemen then baton charged the slum dwellers, leaving five of them with minor injuries.Around 700 illegal shacks and shops were demolished on Sunday.A team of 70 to 80 members carried out the eviction drive, the OC added. The ongoing drive began on Friday after a train ploughed into a crowd standing on the railway line near the Karwan Bazar level crossing on Thursday. Four people were killed and five injured in the accident.
