Chittagong District police detained at least 30 people with huge sharp weapons from two dormitories of Chittagong University (CU) on Friday.
Hathazari police conducted the two-hour raids at Shah Jalal and Shah Amanat halls of the university at 2pm today following a series of clashes between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists on Thursday night and Friday.
Police also recovered huge quantity of country-made sharp weapons including daggers and iron rods during the drives.
However, details of the detainees could not be known immediately.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Chittagong District, Rezaul Masud said police detained them for their alleged involvement in the clashes
“The detainees would be interrogated about the clashes and necessary steps would be taken after investigation”, the ASP added. CU proctor Mohammad Ali Asgar Chowdhury said the drives were conducted for the sake of security of the university and so that no outsiders could stay in the university halls. At least 15 students were injured as two groups of BCL clashed at the university railway station following an altercation on a university-bound shuttle train at about 9:45pm on Thursday night.
Later, the BCL activists were also locked in a series of chase and counter at different places of the university campus on Friday noon.
