30 fishermen abducted in Bay

Staff Reporter :At least 30 fishermen were abducted by a group of armed robbers from Sonadia Channel in the Bay of Bengal in the small hours of Thursday.The robbers attacked trawler FB 65 Horse Power around 3:30am and kidnapped the fishermen when they were coming back to the shore with their catch, quoting the police our correspondent said.Owner of the trawler Joynal Abedin said, “One of my three trawlers came under the attack of robbers when those were returning from deep sea. The robbers abducted 29 fishermen of the trawler. There were 31 fishermen.”A group of at least 15 bandits came on a separate trawler and attacked our trawler, Basha Mia and Bimolendu, who jumped into the river to save themselves, said.Inspector of Moheshkhali Police Station Didar Ferdaus said that police were conducting massive hunt to nab the culprits.He also said that Bangladesh Coast Guard, Bangladesh Navy and Kutubdia police were informed of the incident. “Kutubdia police informed us because the area concerned is under Maheshkhali Police Station,” said Inspector Didar Ferdaus.Commander MA Newaz of Bangladesh Coast Guard said four separate units of coast have already started a search operation in the Bay.
