A Rajshahi court on Monday awarded three people to death for killing Rajshahi University Professor AKM Shafiul Islam in 2014. Anup Kumar, a judge of Rajshahi speedy trial tribunal handed down the verdict around 12:30 pm.
The condemned convicts are- BNP activist Abdus Samad Pintu and Jubo Dal activists Ariful Islam Manik and Sobuj Sheikh. Of them, Sobuj is still absconding.
The court also acquitted eight other accused in the case as no strong evidence was proved brought against them.
On November 15, 2014, some unknown assailants stabbed RU Sociology department professor AHM Shafiul Islam, 48, while he was returning home alone from Rajshahi city’s Choddopai area.
After a year of the murder, the investigation officer of the case Rezaus Sadik of police’s detective branch submitted a chargesheet to the Rajshahi chief metropolitan magistrate court accusing eleven people on November 30, 2015, including Rajshahi district Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal convener Anwar Hossain Ujjal. The other accused of the case are- Nasrin Akter Resma, Abdus Samad Pintu, Ariful Islam alias Manik, Sobuj Sheikh, Sirajul Islam alias Kalu, Sagor, Ibrahim Khalil alias Tokai Babu, Al Mamun, Jinnat and Arif Hossain.
According to the chargesheet, Sabuj, Sagor, Arif, Zinnat and Ibrahim hacked the Professor to death upon receiving instructions from Ujjal and Manik.
