3 to walk gallows for killing 4 Habiganj kids

A tribunal here on Wednesday sentenced three convicts to death and two others to seven years imprisonment in a case filed for killing four children at Sundratiki village in Bahubal upazila of the district.
The death sentence awarded convicts are: Rubel Miah, Arju Miah and Ustar Miah while the lifers are Jewel Miah and Shahed. Of the convicts, Rubel Miah, Jewel Miah, Arju Miah, Shahed Miah and Abdul Ali Bagal were present at the court during the announcement of the verdict.
Ustar Miah, Babul Miah and Billal are on the run while another accused Bachchu Miah was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with the members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
According to the prosecution, four schoolboys, who had gone missing from Sundrateki village in Bahubal upazila on February 12, were found buried at the village on February 17.
Informed by locals, police recovered the bodies of Zakaria Ahmed Shuvo, 8, son of Wahid Miah, his two cousins – Tajel Miah, 10, son of Abdul Aziz, Monir Miah, 7, son of Abdal Miah – and Ismail Hossain, 10, son of Abdul Quadir. Shuvo, Tajel and Monir were the students of Class II, IV and I of Sundrateki Govt Primary School respectively while Ismail was a student of a local madrasa.
Following the incident, Monir’s father Abdal Miah filed a case against nine people.
On April 29, 2016, the then Officer-in-Charge of Detective Branch (DB) Moktadir Hossain, also the investigative officer of the case, submitted charge sheet against the nine accused following their confessional statements.
During the confessional statements, the accused said the gruesome murder incidents were occurred following a longstanding family dispute between Abdal Miah and Abdul Ali Bagal.
On September 7, 2016, the formal trial of the case started at Habiganj District and Sessions Court when the court received testimony of 45 witnesses out of total 57.
Later, the case was transferred to Speedy Trial Tribunal of Sylhet Division for its quick disposal.
