A court here on Thursday convicted three people and sentenced them to death for killing a schoolboy after abduction at Saldai village in Kapasia upazila in 1996.
The condemned convicts-Ataur Rahman, Alam Hossain and Yusuf,
residents of Saldai village,- were also fined Tk 10000 each. Among them, Yusuf was tried in absentia. According to the prosecution, the trio kidnapped Gias Uddin, a resident of Saldai village and a student of Class VII, and demanded Tk 50,000 as ransom on September 5,1996. Following the incident, victim’s father Abdul Baten Bepari filed a case with Kapasia Police Station. Failing to realise the ransom, the convicts killed Gias and concealed his body.
Three months after the incident, police recovered the skeleton of the boy from a beel (water body).
Later, police arrested Ataur, Alam, Yusuf, Judge Miah and his wife Someja Khatun and submitted charge sheet against them. After examining all documents and witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge of Gazipur M Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan handed down the verdict acquitting Judge and his wife Someja.
