A Dhaka court has sent three youths to jail pending trial after they were questioned in police custody for a day for entering Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s motorcade with a private car.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ahsan Habib ordered them into jail on Thursday and fixed Sunday to hear their bail petition again.
No new remand petition has been filed.
The three have been identified as Muyeed Ahmed, 20, Sheikh Shahriar Karim, 21, and Tahsin Reza, 21.
Shahriar hails from Gopalganj’s Tungiparha. His father Sheikh Mohammad Rezaul Islam is a lawyer of Dhaka Bar Association. Muyeed hails
from Shariatpur while Tahsin is from Rangpur.
Rezaul Islam and former Dhaka Bar Association general secretary and pro-BNP lawyer Md Iqbal Hossain, among other lawyers, were present at the judge’s room at the hearing of the bail petition.
Shahin Bapari, one of the lawyers for the accused, said the case was started on bailable charges. “They did not have any intention of violence. And they entered the street after the prime minister’s motorcade had left,” he claimed.
“The accused are good students. They are studying in various institutions, including Dhaka University. Besides these, Shahriar is the son of a senior lawyer of this court. He himself or former Bar Association general secretary Iqbal Hossain will be the bailsman,” Bapari said.
The judge said the court usually try to consider bail for close relatives of lawyers. But since the case is sensitive, so he coud not grant them bail for technical reasons.
Dhanmondi Police Station Inspector Helal Uddin, who is investigating the case, produced the trio before Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday and sought seven days to grill them. Another judge granted him one day to remand the accused.
According to case files, the three youths came close with their private car to the primed minister’s car when her motorcade was passing through Dhanmondi Road No. 8 on Dec 24.
