At least three members of a family were burnt to death and four others received injuries when a devastating fire broke out at a house and then spread to a nearby plastic factory at Islambagh in city’s Lalbagh area on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Shamim Hossain, 32, his wife Shima Akhter, 27, and their cousin Saleha Begum, 35, said Samarendra Nath Biswas, Deputy Director of the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) Headquarters.
Some 15 shops and four multi-storey buildings were gutted in the blaze, Biswas said.
The injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) in a critical condition, he said.
Belal Hossain, Inspector of Control Room of the FSCD, said, “A fire originated from a residential house around 4:30pm and then it spread to the nearby plastic factory.”
At least 12 fire fighting units rushed to spot and took control over the flames around 6:00pm, the Inspector said.
We could not find out the cause of the fire incident immediately, he said.
Mohammad Ibrahim Khan, Deputy Commissioner (Lalbagh Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said that the injured persons were admitted to the DMCH instantly.
The police official claimed that the fire originated from the house.
Chakbazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shamimur Rashid Talukder said that additional police personnel were deployed in the area to avert any untoward situation. The bodies were kept at DMCH morgue, the OC said.
