3 more testify against Papiya, husband

Three more prosecution witnesses testified against expelled Jubo Mohila League leader Shamima Nur Papiya and her husband Mofizur Rahman Sumon on Sunday in the arms case.
They are Inspector Shairul Islam, Sub-Inspector (SI) Sudhason Sarker and Investigation Officer RAB SI Arifuzzaman.
The three witnesses testify in the Metropolitan Sessions’ Judge’s Court of Dhaka on Sunday. However, Judge KM Imrul Qayes could not complete recording the depositions of witness Arifuzzaman. The court fixed September 8 to record the remaining depositions of Arifuzzaman. Later, the defence lawyers would cross-examine him on the day and with that recording the depositions of 12 witnesses including the Investigation Officer would come to the end.
After examining the witnesses, Metropolitan Sessions’ Judge KM Imrul Qayes adjourned the hearing till September 6 on September 3.
 Earlier, the court framed charges in the case on August 23. Investigation Officer (IO) and RAB Sub-Inspector Arifuzzaman filed the charge-sheet against the couple on June 29 and 12 people were made witnesses in the case.
On February 22, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Papiya and her husband, with two of their cohorts, from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport with counterfeit banknotes, foreign currencies and cash money.
RAB later raided their two luxurious flats in the capital’s Indira Road area and recovered a foreign-made pistol, two magazines, 20 bullets, five bottles of foreign liquor and Taka 58.41 lakh in cash, among other things.
