About three lakh people got infected with cancer every year in the country, experts said, while 1.5 lakh patients die during the time. They said also that the number of total cancer patients is 12 lakh, who are mainly the victims of smoking and tobacco related habits.
“Smoking and related habits are the main reasons of cancer. Besides, the negatively changed lifestyles like restless and overnight work for long help spreading cancer,” Dr. Mukhlesuzzaman Hero, Deputy Director of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital told The New Nation.
The experts said, there are very few cancer treatment facilities in the country considering the necessity.
They said it in a discussion meeting in the capital city to mark the World Cancer Day yesterday.
“According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there should be at least 160 cancer treatment centers in Bangladesh, but instead there are 20 such institutes,” Professor Golam Mohiuddin Faruk, the former chief of Radiation Oncology Department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital said it in the discussion meeting held in United Hospital in the city.
The experts also said, there are far difference of cost between the cancer treatments in the country. They said when an institute charges Tk 12 thousand for the treatment, another hospital charges Tk two lakh for the same service.
The day was observed in the country and around the world with three-year theme (2016-18) “We can, I can” to raise the awareness. The experts said that early detection and treatment could lead to cure.
The theme is meant to ‘explore how people as a collective force or as individuals can do their part to reduce the global burden of cancer’.
World Cancer Day is a chance to reflect on what you can do, make a pledge and take action to prevent cancer, the experts added.
In Bangladesh, various organisations, including Bangladesh Cancer Society, have chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the day.
Marking the day, the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital also organised a daylong programme. Health Minister Mohammed Nasim was the chief guest in the programme.
The day inspires the World’s Population in the fight against cancer. It aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about the disease, pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action.
According to the data, currently, 80.2 lakh people die from cancer worldwide every year, out of which, 40 lakh people die prematurely (aged 30 to 69 years).
