3 killed in `gunfights`

Staff Reporter :Three persons were killed in separate “gunfights” with law enforcers in Dhaka, Jhenidah and Gazipur early Monday.In the capital, a team of police arrested Rajib, accused in several robbery cases, in Dakkhin Khan area during the small hours of Monday, said Yunus Ali, Officer-in-Charge of Uttar Khan Police Station.The OC said, “Based on information given by Rajeeb, the law enforcers conducted a drive in the Uttar Khan area around 12:30am to arrest his accomplices. Sensing presence of police, the gang of criminals opened fire, triggering a “gunfight” with the law enforcers that left him injured.” Rajib succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, the police official said. In Jhenidah, an alleged terrorist was killed in a gunfight with the members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Barobazar Koraitala in Kaliganj upazila of the district early in the morning. The deceased was identified as Kamal Hossain, 26. RAB-6 Commanding Officer Major Suruj Miah said, “A patrol team of elite force challenged a gang of criminals who were riding on a motorcycle around 1:30am. Sensing the presence of the team, the criminals opened fire forcing the team to fire back that triggered a gunfight.” Later, police found bullet hit Kamal, but his two other accomplices managed to flee. Injured Kamal was taken to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead. At Gazipur, miscreants opened fired when the elite force members were conducting a drive in the Kumarkhaba area of Joydebpur after they received information of a snatching incident there, said Tuhim Mohammad Masud, Commanding Officer of RAB-1. Sensing danger, RAB members opened fire, which began a “gunfight” and left one Rafizul Islam critically injured. Rafizul, an accused in 15 criminal cases, including murder and robbery, succumbed to his wounds at Gazipur General Hospital, the RAB official said.
