3 killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfights’ in a night

Three persons were killed in two separate “gunfights” in Teknaf and Maheshkhali upazilas of Cox’s Bazar districts on Wednesday night.
Of the deceased, one was identified as Helal Uddin, 30. Two of the deceased were suspected to be drug traders, while Helal was a robber.
Teknaf Rapid Action Battalion- (RAB) 9 In-Charge Mirza Sahed said, “Acting on a tip off, we conducted a raid in Baharchharaghat area early Thursday. Sensing our presence, the yaba traders opened fire at us. In retaliation, we fired back that left two of them injured.”
Meanwhile, police recovered 50,000 pieces of yaba tablets, three firearms, and 14 bullets.
He said they died on way to the hospital. Later, their bodies were sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar morgue for autopsy.
On the other hand, Maheshkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Probhash Chandra Dhar said, “Helal was injured in the gunfight that took place in Shamlapur Dhala around 3:00am.
“The duty doctor declared him dead when taken to Maheshkhali Hospital around 4am,” the OC said.
He added that Helal was a diahard robber and was accused in 14 cases.
Police recovered two firearms, 12 bullet shells from the spot.
Cox’s Bazar Addition al Superintendent of Police Iqbal Hossain said that a total of 13 people were killed in separate “gunfights” in this month.
