3 JMB men held in city, taken on remand

A Dhaka court yesterday (Thursday) placed three members of the banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) on a three-day remand each.
The accused are: Md Shamim Mahfuz alias Suman alias Muanring Morong, 38, Zahidur Rahman, 33, and Ismail Hossain, 39.
Magistrate Amit Kumar Dey of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court passed the order after
hearing on a petition seeking a 10-day remand each.
The Detective Branch of Police arrested them at Sayedabad in the capital on Tuesday night and recovered a laptop and some explosives like substances. when detectives. All of them are from Gaibandha, Pirojpur and Chandpur respectively.
At a briefing in the DB office on the Minto Road, Dhaka, a police official said that Shamim had admitted during the primary interrogation that he along with the other two arrested members were trying to reorganise the country’s militants and at the same time were trying to communicate with al-Qaeda, an international Islami militant organisation.
The police officer claimed that Shamim in his college life was a member of the Islami Chhatra Shibir, a student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. He studied at the Dhaka University. He also was a member of Jama’atul Muslimeen, country’s another militant group.
DB officials are examining the explosives like substances, which they allegedly recovered from the possession of the accused.
