The bridge was 560 feet long and 12 feet wide. In September 2006, part of the bridge collapsed due to a cargo barge pushed.

The bridge was named after the late South District Awami League president Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu.
At present, the construction of girder bridge is underway at a cost of around Tk 29 crore under the RHD. The construction of the bridge was in the hands of Rana Builders and Hasan Builders.
The work was bought from them by a contractor named Zakir Enterprise. The bridge was scheduled to open in current month.
