3 get life-term jail for killing freedom fighter in Rangpur

A court here on Tuesday sentenced three persons to life-term imprisonment for murdering a freedom fighter.
Judge Naresh Chandra Sarker of the Special Tribunal of Rangpur handed down the verdict in presence of the convicts. The court also fined Nazmul Taka 25,000, in default, to suffer more two years rigorous imprisonment. The convicts are Abdul Khaleque, 70, elder brother of the deceased freedom fighter and his nephews Litan Mian, 31, and Rashed, 25, of the same village.
The court also sentenced seven other accused Amirul Haque, Azadul Haque, Raihan, Abdul Kuddus, Manju Mian, Mahbub and Babu to six months jail and fined them Taka 5,000 each, in default, to suffer more one month jail term.
Besides, the court acquitted six others as the charges brought against him were not proved during the prosecution.
The prosecution said the accused persons killed Sekendar Ali, a resident of Madhobpur under Sadar upazila, over a land dispute on July 9, 2014.
Kamruzzaman, the victim’s son, filed a murder case accusing 19 people with Kotwali Thana on the next day.
After investigation into the case, Kotwali Thana police submitted charge sheet against 16 accused persons before the court on November 5, 2014.
After examining 17 witnesses, the court announced the verdict.
