At least 250 people were sued over Sunday’s clash between police and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders and activists in front of the Jatiya Press Club.
Dhaka Metropolitan South BNP President Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, Juba Dal central committee secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, and JCD’s president Fazlur Rahman Khokon were among the leaders sued in the case. Some other named accused were central and district level unit JCD leaders.
Shahbagh Police Station’s SI Palash Saha as plaintiff had filed a case against 203 unidentified people and 47 people with mentioning names at Shahbagh Police Station on Sunday night.
In the case, the police alleged that it was a crime to illegally obstruct the work of the police with sticks and brickbats and to inflict serious bloody injuries by attacking them with the intention of killing.
Meanwhile, police arrested 13 for alleged involvement to clash with police in-front of press club. DMP’s Additional Deputy Commissioner (Ramna zone) Harun-or-Rashid said that JCD leaders and activists attacked the police, and vandalized the windows of a temporary police box adjacent to the press club. That time, several members of the police were injured in the clash.
A case was filed and police arrested 13. We are investigating the matter. All those who directly involved will be brought under the law, he added.
Later, Shahbagh police station SI Md Abdullah, the investigating officer of the case, applied for 10 days remand of each 13 accused on Monday.
The remanded accused are — Manjurul Alam, Ataur Rahman, Masud Rana, Shafiqul Islam, Shairaj, Ahsan Habib Bhuiyan Raju, Kabir Hossain, Monowar Islam, Ariful Haque, Anisur Rahman Khandaker Anik, Abu Hayat Md Zulfiqar, Atif Morshed and Ramzan Ahmed Topon.
A Dhaka court has granted five days remand each 13 accused in a case filed by the police in connection with the clash.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Asaduzzaman Nur passed the order after a court hearing.
Defendants’ lawyers demanded the remand cancelation and applied for bail. At that time, the prosecution held a hearing in favor of remand.
After hearing both the parties, the court granted remand to each of them for five days.
Earlier, JCD leader and activists tried to hold rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club without police permission to protest the death of writer Mushtaq Ahmed in jail custody and the decision to revoke the gallantry award of former president Ziaur Rahman.
The rally was foiled even before it started as a clash broke out between police and the JCD and BNP men. Chase, counter-chase, police fired rubber bullet, tear gas shells turning in to battleground. That time more than 50 activist, police and journalist injured.
