UNB, Dhaka :
Twenty-four political parties, out of 40 registered ones, including BNP, have failed to respond to the Election Commission’s letter asking them to submit their progress reports of keeping at least 33 percent positions reserved for women in their all committees by 2020.
Only 16 political parties, including Awami League and Jatiya Party, informed the Commission about the progress of achieving the goal within the deadline that expired on July 10 last. The remaining 24 parties, including BNP, did not inform about the update of fulfilling the 33 percent quota in all the committee positions with women.
On Thursday last, the EC again sent letters to the general secretaries or the secretaries general of the 24 parties instructing them to submit their progress reports by August 4 next.
“Many political parties didn’t respond to our letters within the given time. So, we’ve resent letters,” said EC additional secretary (now in-charge of secretary) Mukhlesur Rahman. The EC’s move came just to remind the political parties about the goal and know
the progress over the fulfillment of at least 33 percent of all committee positions with women by 2020, he told UNB on Saturday.
As per the Article 90B of the Representation of the People Order (RPO) 1972, a registered political party will have to fix the goal of reserving at least 33 percent of all committee positions for women, including the central committee and successively achieving this goal by 2020. While being registered with the EC, the 40 political parties had promised to achieve the goal. On June 11 last, the Commission first sent letters to 40 parties requesting them to place the progress report over the goal. Responding to the EC’s request, only the ruling Awami League informed that they reached a certain percent, while 15 others said they will achieve the goal by 2020 not clearing their present scenario, said an official at the EC Secretariat.
