23 Santals among 33 get HC bail

The High Court (HC) on Sunday granted bail to 33 people, including 23 Santals, for eight weeks in a case filed by police after a clash took place at Shahebganj cane farm of Rangpur Sugar Mills in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha district in connected with harvesting sugarcane.
The HC Bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice J B M Hassan passed the order after hearing on an anticipatory bail petition filed by the accused.
The accused petitioners appeared in the HC and sought anticipatory bail, apprehending that they could be arrested before reaching the lower court for surrender, Abu Obaidur Rahman, a lawyer for the petitioners, told the reporters.
Police filed the case with Gobindaganj Police Station against 42 people by name and 300 to 400 unidentified men after the incident of clash between Santal people and the staff of Rangpur Sugar Mills on November 6.
The clash left three Santals dead, six missing and 20 others, including nine policemen, injured.
Meanwhile on November 26, Santals of Gaibandha filed a case against 33, including a local Awami League MP Principal Abul Kalam Azad and the UNO of Gobindaganj Abdul Hannan on charge of provoking an attack on the community on November 6.
