220km riverside walkways around Dhaka

Construction of some 220 kilometers walkway around the mega city Dhaka is underway aiming at protecting the Buriganga, Turag, Balu and Shitlakshya rivers from the course of erosion caused by flood and encroachment, the Shipping Ministry said.
The concern agency of the ministry, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), has been assigned to complete the walkway construction within next four years.
Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan laid the foundation stone of the walkway construction, primarily 52km out of total 220km, on the bank of the Turag River at Ashulia on Friday.
He said, the 110km river routes mainly on the Buriganga, Shitalakshya, Turag and Bali rivers are surrounded the growing mega-city of Dhaka.
According to the Shipping Ministry, construction of concrete and cement made walkways will be advanced gradually. The ministry has already launched an anti-encroachment drive as per the mapping of the planned walkway on the banks of the rivers.
A statement of the ministry said, some 10,820- border pillars will be erected to earmark rivers’ boundary. The
walkways included setting up of several echo-parks on convenient spots.
Earlier, the BIWTA has constructed some 20km walkway on the bank of Turag and Shitalakshya in Tongi and Narayanganj and established two echo-parks at Shyampur and Narayanganj.
The BIWTA’s latest move includes setting up RCC (Re-enforced Cement and Concrete) jetty, three echo-parks, 1,000- meter key-wall and 10,820 border pillars at the cost of Tk. 848.55 crore.
The scheme is scheduled to be completed by June 2022.
Under the scheme, separate walkways under different zones planned are: 3.55km from Ramchandrapur to Basila, 4.45km from Rayerbazar to Kamrangir Char, 8.35km from Hasnabad to Kaotail, 3.50km from Sadarghat to Babubazar, 3.725km from Tongi river station to Uzanpur, 3.068km from Pagar Mouza to Harbail, 3.56km from Ashulia to Kamarpara (Dhaka-end), 2.50km at Naraynaganj river port area, 3.750km from Ashulia to Kamarpara (Gazipur-end), 8.55km from Narayanganj Sailo to Kumudini area and 6.0km at Sultana Kamal-Kanchpur area, added the Shipping Ministry statement.
