A total of 216,398 drug-related cases are awaiting trial throughout the country, with the long delays leading to many accused peddlers being granted bail and returning to their illegal trade, said a report of Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
About 46,214 of the cases were filed by the DNC while the rest were filed by law enforcement agencies, Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) and Bangladesh Coast Guard, the DNC report said.
The cases were filed against suspects on charges of possessing narcotic substances such as cocaine, phensedyl, yaba, heroin, locally brewed alcohol, cannabis and drug injections, it added.
DNC Director General (DG) Mohammod Jamal Uddin Ahmed said that they want to strengthen operational activities of the anti-drug watchdog in line with anti-drug control bodies abroad.
The DG also said that the DNC will have bought drug detector machine soon.
Ruhul Amin, Deputy Inspector General (Media) of Police Headquarters, has said, “Police remain zero tolerance over drug issue and the police also implemented with involved cops members.” A drug peddler said that police informed them about the DNC’s anti-drug drive.
