Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) again seized a total of 215 tonnes of open market sale (OMS) rice and wheat when those were being smuggled out from a government silo in Tejgaon and Krishi Market of Mohammadpur in separate drives since Saturday evening.
Two persons, including the manager of the government silo, Humayun Kabir, were detained in this regard, said Sarower Alam, Executive Magistrate of RAB-3.
The rice and wheat was meant to be sold from 141 trucks at a reduced price for low-income people, but instead a syndicate was selling the grains in the black-market, said Sarower Alam.
Last night, eight trucks with 115 tonnes of grains were being smuggled to Chuadanga, Srimangal and Maona when RAB conducted the drive in Tejgaon, the official said.
Another 100 tonnes of grains were seized from Krishi Market in Mohammadpur on Sunday morning, the official added.
Earlier, on July 19 in 2017, a team of RAB-7 detained five persons, including an official of the Food Department along with 155 tonnes of rice which were allegedly being smuggled from a CSD (Central Supply Depot) food warehouse in Chittagong’s Halishahar area.
