21 more die, 1,251 test positive in 24 hours

Twenty-one more people have died from the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) in the last 24 hours, raising the death toll from the pandemic to 370 in the country. Besides, 1,251 fresh cases have been recorded during the time. With this, the total number of positive cases climbed to 25,121.
Prof Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General (Administration) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), revealed the latest figures on Tuesday afternoon at a daily online bulletin on the Covid-19 situation.
She also said in the last 24 hours, 9,091 samples were collected and 8,449 samples were tested in 42 labs across the country, taking the total number of tests conducted so far to 1,93,645.
Of the 21 deceased, 14 were from Dhaka division including seven in Dhaka city, two each in Narayanganj and Gazipur, one each in Narsingdi and Sherpur. Four were from Chittagong division including one in Chittagong district, two in Comilla and one in Chadpur and one each in Mymensingh, Khulna and Barisal divisions.
Nasima further said one of the deceased was between 11 and 20 years of age, two between 21 and 30, two between 31 and 40, five between 41 and 50, five in their 50s, and four between 61 and 70, and two in their 70s years of age.
“Of them, 13 died at hospitals, three at home and the rest five after they were taken to hospitals in critical condition,” she added.
Meanwhile, between Monday and Tuesday afternoon, 408 more patients recovered Covid-19, taking the total number of those who recovered to 4,993.
On May 16, deaths from coronavirus infection crossed the 300-mark in Bangladesh.
According to the DGHS, against the total number of confirmed cases, the recovery rate is 19.21% and mortality rate is 1.46% in Bangladesh.
Nasima further said 326 people were taken to isolation in the last 24 hours, taking the number of isolated Covid-19 patients to 3,616 across the country.
Ninety-three patients were released from isolation in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of people released from isolation to 1,793, she added.
Nasima Sultana said the country’s selected hospitals are equipped with 13,284 isolation beds, 399 intensive care units (ICUs), and 106 dialysis units, altogether.
“A further 4,150 isolation beds were included in Dhaka in the last 24 hours, resulting in a total of 7,250 isolation beds installed in Dhaka now. Besides this, 67 isolation beds are being prepared to be set up at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital and Mymensingh Nursing Institute,” she added.  
A severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new strain of coronavirus, Sars-CoV-2 broke out in China’s Wuhan in December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
As of Wednesday, 320,434 people lost their lives to Covid-19 and while the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases stands at 4,909,136 in 215 countries/territories including Bangladesh.
