2,000 die every year from Leukemia in Bangladesh

About 2,000 patients die from Leukemia in Bangladesh while about 3,000 people are attacked by the disease every year.
A recent statistics said that saying the Leukemia (one kind of blood cancer) patients mainly approach the doctor with the symptoms of anemia. The physicians said that the patients mainly suffer from weakness, bleeding and fever. Public Health Experts said it in a seminar organised by Department of Hematology of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on Sunday to mark World Leukemia Day.
The day is observed every year globally to create awareness about Leukemia across the planet.
Speakers said in the seminar that medical treatment might be different according to the type of Leukemia.
Leukemia is of two types, acute and chronic, and treatment differences depending on the type.
The treatment plan of the patients has to be made considering the risk stage of the disease, physicians said.
The experts said that diagnosis is made by CBC, PBF flow cytometry, bone marrow examination and cytogenetic and molecular tests to find out the patient’s risk level. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Sharfuddin Ahmed stressed on the importance of creating awareness among the people.
“It is very much important to create awareness among the patients, their relatives and health care providers about the diagnosis and treatment of Leukemia diseases,” the VC said.
Chairman of Hematology Department Professor Dr Salahuddin Shah presented the main article in the seminar while Dr Sharmin Yasmin and Dr Meem Zarin Tasnim presented elaborated articles.
BSMMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Zahid Hossain, Dean of the Faculty of Surgery Professor Dr Mohammad Hossain and Proctor Professor Dr Habibur Rahman, among others, were present at the event.
Dr Mili Dey and Dr Maruf Reza Kabir were conducted the programme.
