Two separate cases were filed against two gun-toting Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders and around 200 unidentified people over the clash during a drive to free the footpath in the city’s Gulistan area on October 27.
Hawker Mohammad Siraj filed a case with Paltan Police Station accusing 150 unnamed people on Monday while Abdul Mannan, Sub-Inspector of Shahbagh Police Station filed an attempt to murder case against 50 people, including two BCL leaders who were expelled from the party after brandishing guns during a clash with Gulistan hawkers.
The two ruling Awami League’s student wing leaders are–Md Sabbir Hossain, general secretary of BCL Dhaka south unit and Md Ashiqur Rahman, general secretary of BCL Wari thana unit, police said.
On October 27, hundreds of hawkers locked into clashes with policemen and Dhaka South City Corporation officials following the eviction drive against illegal makeshift stores in Gulistan.
When contacted Monirujjaman Miah, Sub-Inspector of Paltan Police Station, said Hawker Siraj filed the case against 150 unnamed, including the officials and staffs DSCC over the clash. In his case, he mentioned that the hawkers were attacked with local sharp weapons and hockey sticks and their shops were vandalised and looted during the clash, the police official said.
Shahbagh OC Abu Bakkar Siddique said, “Two BCL leaders Sabbir Hossain and Ashiqur Rahman fired gunshots during the clash while 48 others attacked people in the area with sticks.”
“Attempt to murder case has been filed regarding the incident as people could have died,” the police official said.
The two BCL leaders were expelled for “breaching the organisation’s rules” on Monday.
Shahbagh police sued them in a case filed last night in connection to Thursday’s clash, said Abdul Baten, Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
“Police are trying to arrest them,” the police official said.
Meanwhile, Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) on Tuesday has served separate legal notices to some Officers-in Charge (OCs) of concerned police stations to free the hawkers from the roads and footpaths in Gulistan and its adjacent areas within 24 hours.
The HRPB notice also mentioned if the OCs will fail to free the area in due time then it will file cases against the OCs on charge of contempt of court.
The concerned police stations are Ramna, Bangshal, Kotwali, and Sutrapur under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
The High Court Lawyer Advocate Mojil Morshed, on behalf of the HRPB, sent the notice through to the police stations.
The HC also ordered to free the roads and footpaths after hearing a writ on February 26 in 2012.
