DSCC mayor announces: 20-yr-old bus won’t be allowed to ply from next month

Passenger buses of more than 20 years old will not be allowed to ply in the Dhaka South City Corporation area from March this year. Besides, no one will be allowed to drive buses without minimum educational qualification of class eight.
DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon said it yesterday after a meeting with officials from different agencies aiming to reduce traffic gridlock in the city.
“The buses of more than 20 years old will not run in the city from March. Besides this, none will be allowed to drive buses without qualification of minimum class eight. To achieve sufficient civic knowledge, it is important to have minimum class eight degree,” Mayor Sayeed Khokon said.
Replying to the journalists, Sayeed Khokon said, DSCC, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (traffic), Bangaldesh Roads and Transport Authority and Dhaka District administrations will take joint action to implement the decisions.
DSCC mayor said also that many buses are found parking hither and thither at Motijheel, Azimpur, Bahadur Shah Park and many other busy places, it caused huge gridlock.
“It will not be tolerated any more. The meeting decided that no buses will park in streets for rest. The BRTC buses must go back to depots. The extra buses which may not be accommodated in the depots must go to certain other spaces in the city,” he said. Replying to a question, the mayor said, the buses will park at Balurmath, Sadek Hossain Khoka playground and behind the Bangladesh Bank Bhaban.
About the private car parking in Motijheel and other busy areas, mayor said, no one will be allowed to park in streets. He said, “The vehicles’ drivers have violated rules for long taking advantage of the relaxations of concerned departments.”
The mayor also said that they are taking measures one after another to free Dhaka from hazards. “If we take many steps at a time it may not be successful. So we are doing one after another that we may achieve success,” he said.
