Under the influence of deadly super cyclone Amphan, the low-lying areas of four unions under Hatiya upazila in Noakhali district have inundated, breaching the flood control embankment due to the unusual pressure of tidal waves.
As many as 20 villages in these four unions–Sukh Char, Nolchira, Char Ishwar and Nijhum Dweep–which are situated beside the river Meghna have been flooded by tidal waves after early Wednesday afternoon. Sone 20,000 inhabitants of these inundated villages have been shifted to safe shelter centres.
Fish in more than 100 fish farms at Nijhum Dweep union have been washed away by the tidal waters.
The riverine communication between Noakhali district and its Hatiya upazila has severed.
The rains which began on Wednesday morning continued to increase throughout the day. The entire sky of Noakhali district has remained covered with clouds.
Hatiya upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Md Rezaul Karim said unusual tidal waves have created in the river Meghna under the influence of super cyclone Amphan.
