20-party’s hartal underway

Staff Correspondent: The 12-hour countrywide hartal called by the BNP-led 20-party alliance in protest against the parliament’s power to impeach Supreme Court (SC) judges, is underway peacefully. The hartal began at 6:00am on Monday and it will continue till 6:00pm. Vehicular movement is normal in the capital Dhaka. No subversive incident is yet to reported when this story was filed at 8:40am. There were no effects of hartal on passenger transports. The city roads were seen busy as normal days. A good number of passenger vehicles were plying on different routes from the early hour of the day. BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the down-to-dusk hartal from the party’s Gulshan office on Saturday evening. Earlier, one of the key allies of the 20-party alliance Jamaat-e-Islami observed a 48-hour shutdown in two phases on Thursday and Sunday. On September 17, Parliament unanimously passed the 16th constitutional amendment bill, empowering itself to remove Supreme Court judges for misbehaviour and incapacity, rejecting all calls for soliciting public opinion and bringing some changes to the bill.
