A 20-kilometre-long tailback from Meghna Bridge to Daudkandi’s Meghna-Gomoti Bridge has brought vehicular movement to a near halt on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway on the first day of the Eid-ul-Azha vacation. Lengthy traffic congestions on the highways, which have become a common nuisance that turns the journey of thousands of Eid holidaymakers into a nightmare every year, are generally caused by an increased number of vehicles or accidents. On Friday
morning, motorists were seen moving slower than usual from Daudkandi Toll Plaza to Gauripur’s Pennai, a five-kilometre-long stretch.
The additional pressure of vehicles was also causing gridlocks at Gauripur Tin Rastar Morh, Eliotganj, Chandina and Paduar Bazar areas.
Daudkandi highway police OC Abdul Awal said the most pressure was at those points. Gozaria Bhober Char highway police outpost In-charge Sergeant Md Kamaruzzaman Raaz said the traffic jam stretched for 13 kilometres, starting from the Meghna Bridge to the Meghna-Gomoti Bridge. “This has happened due to the increased number of vehicles on the highway.” Abdul Awal said the pressure was bigger and traffic was moving slower due to the huge number of vehicles and cattle-laden trucks. Comilla Superintendent of Police Shah Abid Hossain said law enforcers were working to manage the situation and control traffic at Gauripur, Barparha, Shahidnagar, Hasanpur, Biswa Road, Boldakhal, Toll Plaza and Daudkandi Bridge on the highway to the south.
