Two old women died on the spot and thirty others sustained injuries when a Chandpur bound bus of Bogdad Transport from Cumilla suddenly skidded off the road and turned turtle at Mowtabari under Shahrasti Upazila on Chandpur-Cumilla Regional Highway at 11.15 am today Monday.
The deceased were identified as Biva Rani Das (62), wife of Ranjit Das hailed from Naora village under Shahrasti Upazila and Gita Rani Vowmik(65), wife of Subol Vowmik- a resident of Nimshar under BaruraUpazila of Cumilla.
Shahrasti Thana OC A Mannan told this correspondent from the spot that the bus was coming to Chandpur from Cumilla carrying about 40 passengers. But when it reached Mowtabari area and crossing on a culvert, the driver, now absconding, suddenly lost control over the steering and it skidded off and turned turtle beside a roadside ditch. Locals at once rushed and rescued many people from inside through little windows. Police team and Fire Rescuers teams from Shahrasti and Hajiganj rushed and rescued many other trapped people including these two deceased women from inside the bus. They were sent to Shahrasti Upazila Health Complex where the on duty doctor Jahanara Akter declared both these women dead. The bodies are still lying on hospital premises. Seriously injured three people were admitted to this hospital while about 15 others were given first aid. The rest injured were treated at other private clinics-said the emergency staffs at theShahrasti hospital’s emergency dept.
