2 shrine women slaughtered after rape in M’ganj: 2 held

Two women, one of them a caretaker of a shrine (Majar), were slaughtered to death after allegedly raped by miscreants in the Vitishil Katakhali temple area in Munshiganj sadar upazila early Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Amena Begum, 70, a care taker for 30 years of the shrine, Taijunnesa, 50, a devotee, who came to the
majar from capital on Tuesday night. The slit-throat bodies were recovered from the Barek Langter Shrine (Majar) in the morning.
The members of law enforcing agencies also collected murder scene and rape sample from the shrine.
Two persons were picked up for interrogation in connection with the murder. They are identified as Masud Khan and Babu Khan, Police said.
Additional Superintendent of Police Md Mostafizur Rahman said, “The shrine holds a special prayer session, known as jikir, every Thursday. People from neighbouring districts join the weekly event. They might have been killed by miscreants anytime at night.
We are investigating the incident by giving the priority to dispute over shrine land, previous fund, extortion collection and establishing supremacy on the shrine, the police official said.
Munshiganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Alamgir Hossain said, “The shrine was built in Vitishil Katakhali temple in 1995. Then it was shifted to present plot. The devotees observed orras Sharif (religious discussion) every Thursday of each week. They also perform cultural amusing and instrumental tune. Some of the devotees allegedly take drug at shine.”
Police collected rape samples from the shrine, the OC said.
Law enforcers are trying to unearth the reason behind the murder and identity the killers, the police official said.
The bodies were sent to Munshiganj General Hospital morgue for autopsies, he said.
Munshiganj Municipal Reserve Seat Councillor Hosne Ara said the owner of the shrine’s land, Masud Kotowal, used to address Amena as ‘Ma’.
 “About fifteen years ago, a road side land was developed and a building was constructed there. A signboard with the name of ‘Shah Sulaiman Nangta’ was hung there. I do not know who ‘Shah Sulaiman Nangta’ was.”
There were, however, large prayer gatherings at the location, she added.
Masud Khan, another care taker of the shrine, noticed the bodies inside the shrine in the morning and informed police.
He claimed that they stayed at the shrine on Tuesday night.
Amena’s son Jabed Ali said that he talked with his mother on Tuesday night. But he had no idea about the cause behind the murder. Taijunnesa’s son Kafil Uddin said that his mother visited the shrine as usual from the city’s Shampur on Tuesday night.
