2 river-police men injured in clash with fishermen

Two members of river-police team injured in clash with fishermen when two detained fishermen were being snatched in the Meghna River on Friday during drive for preventing netting of fish defying imposed 22-day ban.
The two injured victims were Manirul Islam, driver, and Abu Jafar. Manirul was admitted to Hizla upazila Health Complex.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Parvez as complainant lodged a case in this connection with Hizla Police Station, said Bellal Hossain, Officer in Charge of Hizla River-Police Station.
Injured river-police team-member Manirul Islam told the local journalists that to prevent fishermen from netting fish they were guarding the river.
Police tried to detain a fishermen group with fishing boats and succeeded to arrest two of them between 12-30 to 1:00 AM from Debua- Antardum area.
Suddenly a group of 30-40 fishermen attacking the law enforcers and injuring us snatched the detained two fishermen, Monirul told.
Bellal Hossain, officer in charge of Hizla River-Police Station, said around 10:00 PM Thursday night a river police team with administrative and fishery officials were sent to Debua-Antardum area of Meghna River to prevent fish netting.
Assistant Sub Inspectors Parvez and Nazrul Islam challenging a fishing boat detained two fishermen engaged in netting fish defying the imposed 22-day ban in that area. Then a group of fishermen with lethal and sharp weapons attacking the law enforcers snatched their two fellow fishermen, the OC of river police said.
In that attack, ASI Monirul Islam and Abjafar were injured and among severely injured Monirul was admitted to Hizla Upazila Health Complex, he added.
Abdul Halim, Hizla upazila fishery official, acknowledging the facts said he was not present at the spot during the drive.
Bakul Chandra Kobiraj, Hizla upazila nirbahi officer, he yet not informed about the incident.
